Lorenzo Martelli’s work carries a sense of life’s ungraspable and unpredictable nature. There is always a “beyond” in his photographs, a meaningful gesture and an aura of mystery, which photography covers with another mystery. Part of his aim is to create images that contain this “beyond” within themselves, images beyond images.

Martelli belongs to a generation of photographers shaped by the virtual dimension, by the experience of no longer living solely in time or in physical places. As a result, his work is not anchored to a fixed narrative dimension. His images unfold as interior itineraries with a life of their own, inviting viewers to look freely, without preordained stories.

Each photograph shines with its own light and geography. Rather than claiming distinction through a signature style, the work seeks the coherence of a whole vision. Martelli engages with the ductility of contemporary photographic language, genres and techniques, with complete freedom. He sees in black and white and in colour at once, moves from wide views to fragments, and from fragments toward the shapeless, where he finds a deeper dimension of cosmic energy.

His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across Europe and the United States and is held in public and private collections. It appears in books and magazines and includes commissions in fashion and visual storytelling.
